Saran IV grotto

The cave of Saran IV , discovered in 1852, is one of the artificial Marnegrottos , an artificial burial cave of the Neolithic Seine-Oise-Marne culture (SOM). It is located in La Grifaine near Chouilly in the Marne department in France .

The grottoes, which were worked vertically or diagonally into the soft subsoil, were closed with stones after use. The first grotto was discovered in 1806. In the winter of 1921–1922, three more Marnegrottos were discovered north of the road from Cramant to Chouilly.

Grotto IV contained, among other things, several axes made of flint with their deer horns, three vases, flint, necklaces, a bowl spoon and petrified wood.

The grotto has been classified as a historical monument since 1961.

Nearby are the necropolises of La Grifaine and Les Ronds Buissons ( French: Les nécropoles d'hypogées de La Grifaine et Les Ronds Buissons à Chouilly (Marne) )
