Grover's Mill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Grover's Mill is a place in the United States ( New Jersey ) and became known as the fictional landing site of the Martians in the radio play The War of the Worlds .

In the book published in 1898 (German title The War of the Worlds ) by H. G. Wells , aliens attack the United Kingdom with three-legged war machines in order to conquer the earth, which is rich in raw materials, from here. The terrestrial military is inferior to the alien invaders worldwide and has to watch helplessly as many cities are destroyed.

Only the bacteria of the earth can defeat the attackers through their non-adapted immune system .

The book was later staged by Orson Welles (not to be confused with the author H. G. Wells) as a radio play in the form of a fictional report . The American radio station CBS broadcast this on the evening before Halloween on October 30, 1938. For this purpose, the setting was moved from England to Grover's Mill and the story was adapted accordingly.

Allegedly there was a mass panic in many parts of the USA at the time, but this is not sufficiently documented.

At the “landing site” there is now a stele with symbols of history and the alleged reactions of the radio listeners.
