growl.info

Growl is a global notification system for macOS and Windows . Programs can use growl to inform the user about events such as new mails or chat messages, files that have already been downloaded or the music track currently being played. Growl offers software developers interfaces for the programming languages Objective-C , C , Perl , Python , Tcl , AppleScript , Java and Ruby .

The user can fully configure which messages to display. Different levels of urgency are also possible, so that the current music track is only displayed for a few seconds, while birthday reminders remain on the screen until the user removes them. Several display styles are available for the notifications.

As of version 1.3, the program was sold commercially via the Mac App Store , since according to the developers, the project could not be further developed otherwise. However, the source code of Growl 1.3 is still freely available. No new version has been released since 2013, which means that there is no support for newer operating systems. The Notification Center introduced in Mac OS X 10.8 continues to provide similar functionality.

In 2008 a version of Growl for Windows was introduced. This was developed independently of the Mac version and differs in the version number and some capabilities, the Windows version was also no longer developed, the latest edition appeared in 2012.

Programs

The Growl website lists more than 200 programs that support Growl, including Opera , Skype or the VLC media player . For some other programs - including Mozilla Firefox , iTunes or Apple Mail - plugins are available that add Growl support.
