The Gruening Glacier is a sweeping glacier on the Black Coast of the Palmerland on the Antarctic Peninsula . It flows in a south-easterly direction between steep rock faces to the north-western part of Hilton Inlet .
Scientists from the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) discovered it while flying over the East Base on December 30, 1940. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1947 after the US politician Ernest Gruening (1887–1974), from 1934 to 1939 director of the Division of Territories and Island Possessions of the Department of the Interior and executive member of the USAS committee.
