Architecture and history

The school building was erected between 1884 and 1887 as the 1st Sudenburger Volksknabenschule and 1st Sudenburger Volksmaädchenschule . The plans go back to the town planning officer Otto Peters and the town planning inspector Emil Jaehn . In addition to the actual double school building with two separate entrances, there was also a latrine building, the rector's residence and a gymnasium with a castellan's apartment. The wall surrounding the school grounds is also part of the construction period. All the buildings in the complex have been preserved. In addition, there was a partition wall between the schoolyards of the girls 'and boys' schools. Remnants of this wall are still there and still show the original separation of the two areas.

The buildings are made of brick and designed in the style of historicism with neo-Gothic elements. The three-storey school building is 70 meters long and has twenty axes. On the courtyard side, there are two tower-like roofed risalites , whose floor plan is designed as a half-octagon. The stairwells are located in the risalits. On the opposite east facade there are flat risalits in the same place. They are crowned by triangular gables. On the ground floor there are bay windows with the original main entrances. The entrances were later moved to the courtyard side. The brick facades on the ground floor are criss-crossed with yellow ribbons. A yellow brick ornament has been incorporated between the first and second floors at the level of the sill zone. The main cornice consists of a double German band and a pointed arch frieze.

On the street is the residential building inserted into the outer wall, in which the official apartments of the two school principals are housed. A single-storey extension served as the caretaker's apartment. These buildings and the wall are also designed as brick buildings with yellow ribbons.

The gym belonging to the school has five axes. To the north there are large windows, to the south surface mirrors were used as protection from the sun. On the first floor of a two-story extension there were changing rooms and a room for sports equipment, while the upper floor housed an apartment for the caretaker. The original latrine building has also been preserved, but has been heavily rebuilt.

The wrought-iron railings in the stairwells and in parts of the flooring have been preserved from the interior furnishings. The original doors have also been refurbished and a large number of them are still there. The school bells of the Sudenburg elementary school also hang in the school entrances. The classrooms are laid out on both sides of a central aisle.

The school complex is remarkable due to the fact that the entire ensemble has been largely preserved, including the outbuildings and the planting of the school yard with chestnuts. It is as a special witness to the late nineteenth regarded school building.

The building complex is listed as a school in the local monument register under registration number 094 81936.

During the GDR era , the school building was operated as a polytechnic high school . In the 1990s it served as the Wilhelm Raabe grammar school before it was used as a primary school.
