Grupo Ibiza 59

The GRUPO IBIZA 59 was an artist group that originated in 1959 on the Spanish island of Ibiza .

Across national borders, artists of different nationalities but with common artistic interests and goals came together in Ibiza. The GRUPO IBIZA 59 included Erwin Bechtold , Erwin Broner , Hans Laabs , Katja Meirowsky , Bob Munford, Egon Neubauer, Antonio Ruiz, Bertil Sjöberg and Heinz Trökes . The artists Carlos Sansegundo, Pierre Haubensak and Bob Thompson later joined them. Together the group organized exhibitions - also with guests from outside such as Genovés , Mompó, Braque , Dubuffet , Ernst , Miró - which attracted attention beyond Spain.

Erwin Broner formulated a kind of artistic credo for the group in 1961 in his foreword to the catalog for the exhibition in the Haus am Waldsee , Berlin, where the GRUPO IBIZA 59 was presented:

“Apart from the assumed relationship in the choice of new forms of expression and means, there was a strange, surprising kind of community that unites us in our work. Something that underlies the nature of each and every one of us. It is the particular artistic restlessness, a dissatisfaction with quick effects and results, an always new beginning, a turning around and questions about the real usefulness of means of expression for the necessary artistic statement. The same principle in our work: At the beginning the need to communicate something, to say something and then not to be seduced by the invention of aesthetic-decorative niceties. "

The group of artists disbanded in 1964. Its members were still represented in the 1964 Inspiration Ibiza exhibition in the Leicester Galleries, London, initiated by the gallery owner Ivan Spence, Ibiza, and in which other artists living on Ibiza such as Karl Fred Dahmen also took part.

In 1992, the Museu d'Art Contemporani d'Eivissa (MACE), Ibiza Museum of Contemporary Art, under the direction of Elena Ruiz Sastre, honored the group's artists in a series of events including panel discussions, television appearances and the GRUPO IBIZA 59 Passat i Present exhibition .

The GRUPO IBIZA 59 was also represented in 2002 in the exhibition of works by contemporary artists in Ibiza and Formentera, Pitiüses 59-02 Art Contemporani a Eivissa i Formentera , which was supported by the Govern de les Illes Baleares and shown on the Balearic Islands and the mainland.
