Erwin Bechtold

Erwin Bechtold (born April 12, 1925 in Cologne ) is a German painter.

life and work

Bechtold completed an apprenticeship as a printer and typesetter. From 1950 to 1951, Bechtold was a student at Fernand Léger's painting school in Paris . After several stays in Barcelona , Ibiza and Berlin , Bechtold settled in Ibiza in the town of Sant Carles de Peralta . The house he designed is considered a prime example of independent modern architecture with traditional references to the Balearic Islands. Bechtold is considered to be the co-founder of the artist group Grupo Ibiza 59 , which originated in Ibiza . From 1966 Bechtold worked as a lecturer for the West Surrey College of Art and Design in Farnham and Guildford. Bechtold exhibited at the Documenta in Kassel in 1968. In addition to two important exhibitions in the Kunsthalle Mannheim under Heinz Fuchs (1971) and Manfred Fath (1988), a total of 7 exhibitions by Bechtold took place in the Galerie Margarete Lauter, also in Mannheim, between 1965 and 1992. The facade of the Museum Weltkulturen D 5 of the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums in Mannheim , completed in 1988, was designed by Bechtold and technically implemented by the architect Carlfried Mutschler . Bechtold has received several prizes and awards. In 1990 he was awarded the honorary professorship of the state of Baden-Württemberg . His awards include the Joan Miró Prize in 1973 and the Balearic Ibiza Award Homage for Art from Barcelona in 1999. In 2006 he was awarded the Ramon Llull Prize.

In 1971 Bechtold played alongside other artists and celebrities living in Ibiza at the time such as Christopher Plummer , Robert Graves , Princesa de Borbón y Parma , Camilo José Cela , Leslie Grimes , Leonard Slater and Charles Orloff in the film Impromptu Balear by the director Francisco Rovira Beleta and the Producer and screenwriter Enrique Josa with.

Erwin Bechtold is a member of the German Association of Artists . He took part in its annual exhibition thirteen times between 1971 and 1990.

The MKM Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art, Duisburg is organizing an extensive retrospective of Bechtold from March 11 to May 24, 2020.
