Francisco de Asís Rovira Beleta (born September 25, 1912 in Barcelona , † June 23, 1999 ibid) was a Spanish film director and screenwriter .

Live and act

Francisco Rovira Beleta initially studied law at the University of Barcelona , but turned to film after graduating in 1942. He began his career as a screenwriter and then as an assistant director at the Spanish film studio Cifesa. There he assisted Luis Lucia and Juan de Orduña . His first independent full-length directing work was Doce horas de vida (1949). With works such as the detective film The World Will Be Our Own ( El expreso de Andalucía , 1956), Rovira Bel became one of the early exponents of Spanish film noir .

One of Rovira Beleta's best-known films is the flamenco dance film Los Tarantos (1963) with Carmen Amaya as the main actress, a version of Romeo and Juliet set between warring “Gypsy” families in Barcelona. This directorial work earned him, among other things, an Oscar nomination in the category of best foreign language film in 1964 . He achieved the same success in 1968 with the drama El amor brujo with Antonio Gades and La Polaca in the leading roles. The film is based on the ballet of the same name by Manuel de Falla .

In the 1970s, Rovira Beleta also worked for television, so he shot three episodes of Curro Jiménez , a 19th-century series about an Andalusian outlaw for Televisión Española .

Rovira Beleta was one of the founders and dean of the College of Directors de Cinema de Catalunya in Barcelona. In 1987 he was awarded the Premi especial de Cinematografia de la Generalitat for his life's work. In 1994 the Ministry of Culture of Spain awarded him the Medalla de Oro al mérito en las Bellas Artes.

Rovira Beleta married Rosario Llovera in 1945, with whom he had four children. He died at the age of 86 in his native city of Barcelona.
