Militant Liberty

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Militant Liberty was a top-secret program developed by Evangelical John C. Broger for the United States Department of Defense , intended for religious conversion in the political field and intended to promote "evangelical democracy" both internationally and within the United States. The program was particularly championed in the 1950s by US Admiral Arthur W. Radford , then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff . In the film " The Wings of Eagles " (1957), with John Wayne in the lead role and John Ford as director, elements of the content of Militant Liberty were incorporated.

The program was ultimately rejected within the US armed forces because of its religious nature, and military academies also declined to incorporate it into their teaching content, especially after Militant Liberty's links to right-wing political extremists became known. According to research by journalist Jeffrey Sharlet , the program was developed and funded by an evangelical network now known as The Family . Karl Leyasmeyer, a "field representative" of the "International Christian Leadership" associated with "The Family" also produced the anti-communist propaganda film "Militant Liberty" as part of the program of the same name.
