Gruven

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gruven is a desolate place in the Schmallenberg area in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

The place was probably above Latrop in the Grubental, but possibly also at the exit of the Grubental. The Mark Ulepheri in the woods near Gruven was mentioned in a document in 1297. A Hermann von Gruwelsipe, who was named as a witness in a Grafschafter document in 1284 , may come from Gruven. The settlement, whose existence has not been proven with absolute certainty, fell into desolation by the 14th century at the latest.

Like many other places, the place fell victim to the great desolation process in the late Middle Ages . It must have been a creeping, slow process. This began around 1300. It is possible that this process lasted until the middle of the 15th century. The downfall of this urban settlement is probably connected with the development of the urban center of Schmallenberg. Another reason was plague epidemics and the need of the residents to seek refuge in the city.
