Guðmundur Friðjónsson (born October 24, 1869 in Sílalækur , Aðaldalur , today Þingeyjarsveit ; † June 24, 1944 in Húsavík ) was an Icelandic writer .

Life

Guðmundur was the son of the farmer Friðjón Jónsson and his wife Sigurbjörg Guðmundsdottír. Like his parents, Guðmundur later earned his living as a farmer. One of his siblings was Sigurjón , who was two years his senior and who was also known as a writer. In the 1880s, Iceland experienced a famine that shaped Guðmundur's early literary work. From 1891 to 1893 he attended a school in Möðruvellir .

In the early 1890s, Guðmundur began writing poetry and short stories. Many of them are designed as socially critical satires. Others were based on symbolism . He published his works in magazines and in 1898 in his first book, the Einir collection of short stories .

His marriage to Guðrun Oddsdóttir in 1899 is considered to be a turning point in his writing. If his early stories were still immature, this has now changed, even if his volume of poetry Úr heimahögum, published in 1902, was panned in a review in the journal Þjóðolfur . Guðmundur published numerous books with short stories and poems and in 1907 the novel Olöf í Ási . His work was influenced by old Icelandic literature and realism . Politically, Guðmundur - in contrast to Halldór Laxness , whose views he rejected - were more conservative.
