Gualtiero Calboli (born January 3, 1932 in Bologna ) is an Italian classical philologist with a focus on Latin studies .

Since 1973 he has been a full professor of Latin language and literature at the Magister Faculty ("Lingua e letteratura latina nella Facoltà di magistero") and since 1996 at the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy ("Facoltà di lettere e filosofia") of the University of Bologna . Today he is a professor emeritus.

From 1982 to 2000 he was the head of the Department of Classical Philology and Medieval Studies at the same university. He is a member of numerous international academies: the "International Colloquium for Latin Linguistics", the international committee for vulgar and late Latin, which he co-founded in 1985 and of which he is honorary president, the "International Society for the History of Rhetoric", the "Linguistic Society of America ”and the“ Centro di Studi Ciceroniani ”. He is president of the “Centro di Studi Varroniani”.

Calboli has published critical editions by Marcus Porcius Cato and Cornificius. He was editor of the series “Papers on Grammar”, which appeared in 13 volumes from 1980 to 2008 (first in Bologna with CLUEB and then in Rome with Herder). Since 2013 he has been editor-in-chief with Pierluigi Cuzzolin of the "Journal of Latin Linguistics", an international specialist journal for Latin linguistics published by De Gruyter. Calboli has directed and organized several international congresses in Bologna and then edited the congress files: 1985 and 2003 the “International Colloquium on Latin Linguistics” and in 1988 the “Colloque Latin Vulgaire - Latin Tardif”. In 2004 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from a Dr. honoris causa of the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster.

In addition to numerous articles, he has published 7 books so far. In addition to two text editions, there is an introduction to the case syntax from the point of view of modern linguistics, which appeared in 1972, and an Italian grammar published in 1989 together with G. Moroni.

Among the numerous students that Calboli produced are Anna Orlandini (Bologna) and Giovanbattista Galdi (Gent).

Currently, Calboli is considered to be one of the greatest experts in Latin linguistics and its relationships with contemporary linguistics, especially formal approaches.

He is married to Lucia Calboli-Montefusco , professor of rhetoric at the University of Bologna, and the father of three adult sons.
