Guan Zhong

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Guan Zhong ( Chinese  管仲 , Pinyin Guǎn Zhòng ; also Guanzi , Chinese  管子 ; *?, † 645 BC) was a famous politician and philosopher of the spring and autumn periods . His nickname (ming) was Yiwu ( Chinese  夷吾 ). Guan came from Yingshang ( Chinese  颍 上 ) (today's Yingshang circle ( Chinese  颍 上 县 ) in Anhui Province ). He was Chancellor of Qi State ( Chinese    /  ) and close confidante and advisor to Duke Huan of Qi ( Chinese  齊桓公  /  齐桓公 ) for fourteen years .

Guan Zhong was friends with Bao Shuya ( Chinese  鮑叔牙 , Pinyin Bào Shūyá ), a statesman from Qi who served as a minister under Duke Huan of Qi and who recommended Guan as Chancellor.

He is reported in many ancient texts, e.g. B. in Zuozhuan , Lunyu and Shiji .

Guanzi ("Master Guan")

Under the name of Guan Zhong, a book called Guanzi ( Chinese  管子 ) ("Master Guan") was written, in which the deeds and thoughts of Guan Zhong are recorded.

However, this work was obviously not compiled until centuries later and is considered a collection of various anonymous writings from the Jixia Academy .

Like the writings of the philosopher and statesman Han Fei , it consists of legalistic and Daoist parts. Guan Zhong is considered one of the fathers of Chinese legalism.

The Guanzi was translated into English by Walter Allyn Rickett .
