Yu Yue ( Chinese  俞樾 ; 1821 - 1907 ), also known as Yu Yinfu (荫甫) and Quyuan (曲园), was a Confucian scholar, philosopher and renowned Chinese scholar , who in the last period of Qing dynasty lived.

life and work

Yu was born in 1821 and was originally from Deqing, Zhejiang Province . After passing the Imperial Hanlin Academy's official and student exam, he held various positions in the academic bureaucracy. Shortly afterwards he gave up his responsibilities and retired to Suzhou (Jiangsu) , where he devoted himself to teaching and reinterpreting Chinese classics. Zhang Binglin was one of his outstanding students. He died in 1907. He was famous for studying the classics, the ancient philosophers and also as a philologist. He valued the theories of Wang Niansun and Wang Yinzhi (father and son) and followed in their footsteps. The British sinologist Arthur Waley points out in his translation of the Conversations of Confucius that the methods of critical philology for the text [of the Lunyu] were first used by such scholars as Ruan Yuan (1764-1849), Wang Niansun (1744-1832), Wang Yinzhi (1766–1834) and Yu Yue (1821–1906) were used, and that the only European writer to have used these native studies for any purpose was Chavannes , in his treatment of the Confucius biography in the Mémoires Historiques (ie his French translation of Sima Qian's first books of Shiji ). The authors of the modern Hanyu da zidian, for example, refer to his studies on numerous early Chinese texts . The philosophical-scientific treatise Rizhi lu 日 知 录 (Notes on Daily Learning) by Gu Yanwu was edited by Yu Yue with short annotations and comments. His studies Zhuzi pingyi诸子 平 议 (A Justified Discussion of Philosophers) and Qunqing pingyi群 經 平 議 (A Justified Discussion of the Classics - Analysis and Commentaries on the Confucian Classics), in which Yu Yue describes the methodology of Wang Yinzhi's work (in whose Jingyi shuwen 經 義 述 聞 ) follows, also his Gushu yiyi juli古书 疑义 举例. His studies have mostly appeared in thematically combined collections, which in turn have been printed in Congshu , in particular the Chunzaitang quanshu春 在 堂 全书.

The former residence of Yu Yue (Yu Yua jiuju 俞 樾 旧居 or Quyuan 曲 園) in Suzhou is on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (6-928).
