Gudō Wafu Nishijima ( Japanese 西 嶋 愚 道 和 夫 , Nishijima Gudō Wafu ; * 1919 in Yokohama ; † January 28, 2014 ) was a Japanese Rōshi of the Sōtō School of Zen .

Nishijima studied Zen under Kōdō Sawaki and Rempo Niwa, from whom he received the Dharma transmission . He founded the Buddhist group Dōgen- Sangha in Tokyo, where he gave lectures in English for foreign students. Nishijima is the author of several books. He has the Shōbōgenzō , a Buddhist text by Eihei Dōgen (1200-1253), translated from ancient Japanese into modern Japanese and commented on it. He is jointly responsible for the translation into English and German. Nishijima has developed his own interpretation of the Shōbōgenzō. According to this interpretation, Master Dōgen describes the reality in Shobogenzo from four different perspectives.
