history

In ancient times , the site of the Guildhall was home to the largest amphitheater in the province of Britain. Some parts of the building date from 1411. The buildings were badly damaged in the Great Fire of London in 1666, but the medieval walls were preserved. In 1670 the interior was restored.

Many rooms and the characteristic front facade were created by George Dance the Younger between 1772 and 1806, with only the front facade remaining to this day.

The English carpenter , inventor and self-taught clockmaker John Harrison constructed his first pendulum clock at the age of almost 20 in 1713 , which can still be seen in the exhibition rooms of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in Guildhall. The reason for building the clock and the question of where he obtained the necessary knowledge from are unclear. In 1715 and 1717 he built two very similar pendulum clocks.

Renewed destruction took place due to the bombing in 1940. The reconstruction took place in the years 1953 to 1954 according to the designs of the architect Giles Gilbert Scott .
