Zero Regio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zero Regio (Region without Emissions) was a multilateral, integrated project to develop a transport system with hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles in two European regions, which started in November 2004 and was completed in 2009.

Hydrogen Center Industriepark Höchst in Frankfurt

As part of the 6th European Research Framework Program , this project by various companies and institutions from four EU member states established a hydrogen infrastructure with tank systems and vehicle fleets in the Rhine-Main area and Lombardy . More than a third of the project was financed from European funds.

The hydrogen was made available by using the hydrogen from a chlorine gas system from Hoechst , with hydrogen produced industrially and on site. The designation “Zero Regio” therefore only applies to the tank-to-wheel approach of the vehicles, but not to the hydrogen supply ( well-to-tank ), since a large part is obtained from fossil natural gas , primarily by means of steam reforming .

The results and experiences of the three-year test phase should help to achieve the long-term goal of the European Commission at the time that 5% of all transport vehicles on Europe's roads will run on hydrogen by 2020. With a few hundred hydrogen vehicles by 2010, this goal is unrealistic. The construction phase for the hydrogen infrastructure lasted until the end of 2006. From November 2006 the fleets of fuel cell vehicles and the hydrogen infrastructure were tested and checked for their suitability for everyday use.

The project was completed at WHEC 18 (World Hydrogen Energy Conference) in May 2010 in Essen. The project results were published on the website.
