Zemships

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The project Zemships ( Zero Emission Ships , dt. Zero-emission ships) pursues the aim of developing one with a hydrogen -powered passenger ship .

The selected ship is a new building for the Alster Shipping in Hamburg and is called "Alsterwasser". An electric motor is fed with the energy of a fuel cell system . The keel was laid at the SSB Spezialschiffbau Oortkaten shipyard on December 4, 2007, and the handover to the operator ATG Alster Touristik GmbH - a subsidiary of Hamburger Hochbahn AG  - took place on August 29, 2008 by Anja Hajduk (Senator for Urban Development and Environment) in Presence of the Federal Minister of Transport Wolfgang Tiefensee .

On April 28, 2010 there was a fire in the battery room during test drives, which caused some damage. The hydrogen did not pose a risk of explosion. The Alsterwasser has been in use again since May 10, 2011.

After operating the Alsterwasser for over 5 years, the ship has carried over 50,000 passengers on the Alster without emissions. It has not been operational since autumn 2013 because it is no longer refueled. There were no technical reasons for the gas station closure. Obviously, it is economically unattractive to supply a single ship that comes to refuel every three days. In the spring of 2014, the refueling station on the Barmbeck branch canal was dismantled.

Refueling

Hydrogen filling station Hellbrookstrasse

The hydrogen filling station was equipped with a 17,000 liter liquid hydrogen tank. The ship was refueled using pressurized hydrogen at 350  bar . In 2013, the hydrogen filling station operated by Linde AG was abandoned and dismantled.
