Guillaume-François Debure

Guillaume-François Debure (also: de Bure; * February 23, 1732 in Paris ; † July 15, 1782 ibid) was a French bookseller and bibliographer .

Life

Guillaume-François Debure owned a bookshop in Paris. His grandfather and father were already booksellers. He first published a Museum typographicum, seu collectio, in qua omnes fere libri rarissimi notatuque dignissimi accurate recensentur (Paris 1755) under the pseudonym Rebude (representing an anagram ) , a youthful experiment on 43 pages, of which only 12 copies were printed. After a long period of preparation, his main work Bibliographie instructive, ou traité de la connoissance des livres rares et singuliers (7 vols., Paris 1763–68) was published, which was systematically arranged and conveniently set up for research purposes. This should be linked to the Supplément à la bibliographie instructive, ou catalog des livres du cabinet de feu M. Louis-Jean Gaignat (2 vols., 1769) and the bibliography instructive, tome 10, contenant une, edited by Jean-François Née de La Rochelle table destinée à faciliter la recherche des livres anonymous qui ont été annoncés par M. Debure… (1782). Through this work Debure contributed very much to the spread of bibliographical knowledge in France, and neither the reviews of Barthélemy Mercier de Saint-Léger (in the Journal de Trévoux , Paris 1763) nor those of the Abbé Rive could diminish his merit. Debure also published catalogs of sizable libraries, including that of Paul Girardot de Préfond ( Catalog des livres du cabinet de M. G… D… P… , 1757) and that of the Duke of La Vallière ( Catalog des livres provenans de la bibliothèque de MLDDLV , 2 vol., 1767). From 1768 to 1770 he was co-editor of the weekly Lettres sur la méthode de s'enrichir promptement .
