Life

Chaminade was ordained a priest in 1785 and set the focus of his work in the pastoral care of young people by giving poor young people an education. During the French Revolution he worked closely with Marie-Thérèse Charlotte de Lamourous (1754-1836), who was involved in the underground church and founded The Miséricorde ("House of Mercy") in Bordeaux, a home for former prostitutes. He was later forced to flee Bordeaux to Zaragoza in Spain because of his activities . In 1800 he returned to Bordeaux. He gathered young people around him who formed a community of lay people in the name of the Blessed Mother Mary ( Congregation ). From this congregation grew the Marian lay congregations (1800), the religious orders of the Marian sisters (1816) and the " Marianists " (1817).

Chaminade was beatified on September 3, 2000 in Rome by Pope John Paul II .

His tomb is on the Cimetière de la Chartreuse in Bordeaux.
