Cimetière de la Chartreuse
The Cimetière de la Chartreuse ( German "Cemetery of the Charterhouse") is one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in the French city of Bordeaux .
history
The cemetery was laid out in the garden of the former Carthusian monastery at the end of the 18th century. The site used to be a swamp area , which Archbishop François de Sourdis had in 1610 drained with the help of the Carthusians for the construction of a Carthusian monastery , of which only the cemetery portal remains today. The portal was placed under monument protection on April 8, 1921 as Monument historique .
In 1968 the monument to the fallen was transferred from the Algerian twin town of Bougie (now Bejaia). It consists of 24 bronze plaques and is dedicated to the victims of the two world wars .
