Guillaume de Bussy or de Bucy († 1258 ) was a bishop of Orléans in the 13th century.

biography

He was elected bishop by the cathedral chapter of Orléans in 1237 and the following year by Pope Gregory IX. confirmed in office. On May 13, 1239 he was present on the Mont-Aimé at the “great burnt offering” ( maximum holocaustum ), during which 183 heretics were burned. With King Ludwig IX. (Saint Louis) he took the cross for the sixth crusade in 1248 , from which he returned home in 1249 after taking Damiette . In a 1252 letter to the Bishop of Chichester, Richard of Wych , Bussy reported on the king's peace negotiations with the Mameluks .

On June 11, 1251, the masses of the Shepherd's Crusade invaded Orléans and fought street fights with the students of the university. Since Bussy had condemned this movement and forbade any discussion with its leader, he too was attacked by the “shepherds”; twenty-five of his clerics were killed in the process. A few days later they moved on to Bourges .

Bishop Guillaume de Bussy died in 1258.
