Numerous remains from prehistoric times have been found on the 240 meter high summit . There was probably a Gallic oppidum there once ; further finds indicate that Louis II of France resided there in 877.

In 1210 a castle was built under Blanka of Navarre , but it was abandoned in the 15th century. In front of this castle, 183 heretics were burned on May 13, 1239 at the instigation of Inquisitor Robert the Bulgarian . Nowadays only ruins are evidence of the building .
