Guillermo Stirling (2003)

Guillermo Eduardo Stirling Soto (born March 4, 1937 ) is a Uruguayan lawyer and politician.

From 1998 to 2004 he was Interior Minister under Presidents Julio María Sanguinetti and Jorge Batlle Ibáñez . In 2004 he was the presidential candidate of the Partido Colorado , but the party suffered one of the worst defeats in its history with just 10.36% of the vote and was far behind the Partido Nacional with its top candidate Jorge Larrañaga (34.3% of the vote) and the election winner , the Frente Amplio with the current Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez (50.4% of the vote). The main reasons for this defeat are the economic crisis and an aging party leadership.
