Guillermo White

Guillermo White (born June 27, 1844 in Dolores , Argentina , † February 11, 1926 in Mar del Plata , Argentina) was an Argentine engineer and industrialist. In 1899 the Argentine port city Ingeniero White near Bahía Blanca was named after him.

Life

Guillermo White was the son of the Argentinian Allien White, who was also born in Dolores in the province of Buenos Aires , and his wife Juana Brunel from Uruguay. His grandfather was Guillermo Pío White, who immigrated to Argentina from Boston (USA) in 1797. White married Elena Frias and had seven children. He died at the age of 81 and is buried in the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires .

job

White graduated from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) as one of the first engineers , which is why he is one of the so-called "twelve apostles of Argentine engineers". In 1871 he became a lecturer in calculus at the mathematics faculty and later dean. He belonged to a commission that was supposed to lay the foundations for today's Argentine Scientific Society (Sociedad Científica Argentina) . From 1875 to 1876 he was its vice-president and from 1877 to 1884 its president with great success.

In 1883 White joined the Southern Railway Company (Ferrocarril del Sud) , where he held the post of local director from 1887 to 1917. At the same time he devoted himself to the railroads of Buenos Aires and Rosario , which were later merged to form the Argentine Central Railway (Ferrocarril Central Argentino) . The tram companies of Buenos Aires and Dock Sud also merged and elected White as their president.

The first development of the hinterland took place on behalf of the army. The Argentine Interior Minister Benjamin Zorrilla told White the need for a railway line to Neuquén because of a possible war with Chile over certain border disputes. Since, in White's opinion, this route would not have been worthwhile for the company, it received government support for this project. Within two years, 500 kilometers of the route were completed and handed over on June 1, 1899. Further development was carried out by the Southern Railway .

At the age of 73, White retired from work in 1917 and spent the last few years at his property in Mar del Plata .

Ingeniero White

By resolution of June 20, 1899, the Bahía Blanca upstream town and its port, which until then were called El Puerto, were renamed Ingeniero White (Engineer White) . Today Ingeniero White belongs to Gran Bahía Blanca and is one of the most important overseas ports in Argentina.
