Surname
The name Ingeniero White was given to the place El Puerto by decree of the Argentine President Julio Argentino Roca on June 20, 1899 as a tribute to the engineer and industrialist Guillermo White , who made a name for himself in the construction of railroads in Argentina and who also built the Buenos Aires – Bahía Blanca line would have.

Ingeniero White is 10 kilometers from the center of Bahía Blanca.
population
The population decreased by 5.2% from 11,065 in 1991 to 10,486 in 2001.
history
The history of the place begins with the discovery of America . In 1520, Ferdinand Magellan discovered the bay in which Ingeniero White is located today and called it Bahía de los Bajos Anegados , although those who lived there called it Blanca Vadia or Vadia Blanca . Spanish sailors called them Bahía de los Buenos Cables , English blanca .
In 1827 the Argentine President Bernardino Rivadavia and Martín Rodríguez planned the construction of a city and a port in the south of what is now the province of Buenos Aires and decided on the name Bahía Blanca . The founding charter speaks of Fortaleza Protectora Argentina and Puerto Esperanza . Nueva Buenos Aires was also suggested as a name, but Bahía Blanca was prevailed by the residents . The port and the surrounding settlement was simply called El Puerto until 1899 .
The importance grew at the beginning of the 20th century due to the large immigration of mostly Europeans who settled in the city and in the port. Today Ingeniero White is after Bahía Blanca itself the most important place in the Bahía Blanca district.
economy
The harbor
The port concession was granted to the Southern Railway Company (Ferrocarril del Sud) in 1883 . When it was inaugurated in 1885, the port had a small curved quay which, because of its moderate size, could only accommodate three overseas ships and three coastal ships. The increase in grain exports from 1889 led to considerations to build a larger quay in steel construction. The corresponding work began in 1902.
Today the port is one of the main sea ports in Argentina because of its water depth. The existence of the port encouraged the establishment of industry in the region with one of the most important petrochemical complexes in Argentina.
There are two distinct areas within the port. The first area is dedicated to cereals and grain products and was dominated in 2006 by the companies Platestiba SAC, Terminal Bahía Blanca SA and Cargill SAIC . The second area faces west and is dedicated to commerce in general. This area originally developed from the throughput of chilled and frozen goods, especially fruit and fish. There is a cooling capacity of 82,000 m³. Both areas have rail links.
At positions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 21 the coastal fishermen and the ships of the port service are at home.
The petrochemical complex
The Ingeniero Whites petrochemical complex consists of an articulated production chain that can be followed by individual links. Currently the complex consists of three types of industries:
- Oil industry with a capacity of 4 million tons per year. Products include heating oil , diesel , kerosene , gasoline and asphalt .
- Petrochemical industry with a capacity of 3.4 million tons per year. Products are ethene , polyethylene , polyvinyl chloride , urea and ammonia .
- Chemical industry with a capacity of 350,000 tons per year. Products are chlorine and sodium hydroxide .
It is estimated that the petrochemical complex's contribution to the local economy is no less than $ 125 million a year. According to surveys from 2001, the complex accounts for 45% of total Argentine production. The most important companies are PPB Polisur, Solvay Indupa, Compañía Mega y Profértil .
