Rubber mallet

A rubber mallet

A rubber mallet is a hammer with a thick, usually cylindrical head made of a hard rubber compound and wedged into a wooden handle.

Rubber hammers are mainly used to hit or fit sensitive components in place without damaging them, for example when knocking down fittings or locks in doors, when fitting thin wooden panels on pieces of furniture, sheet metal in automobile construction or plasterboard in drywall .

As tools for laying tiles or stone pavement , they are used to knock down the laid tiles, as a metal hammer would damage the tiles. In addition to rubber hammers, metal hammers with a vulcanized hard rubber attachment, so-called paving hammers, are used for laying stone pavement.

When camping, a rubber mallet is usually used to hammer in the pegs so that no burrs form on the peg from the hammer blows.
