Coordinates: 35 ° 4 ' S , 148 ° 7' O Gundagai Shire was a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area was 2,458 km² and last had about 3,700 inhabitants. In 2016, it went up in the Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council .
Gundagai was located in the southeast of the state on the Murrumbidgee River about 160 km northwest of the Australian capital Canberra and 370 km southeast of the metropolis Sydney . The area comprised 49 hamlets and villages, including Adjungbilly, Coolac, Darbalara, Gundagai, Mundarlo, Muttama, Pettitts, Reno, Tumblong and parts of Jugiong and Nangus. The headquarters of the Shire Council was in Gundagai, which is now home to around 1,900 people.

The Gundagai Shire Council had eight members who were elected by LGA residents. Gundagai was not divided into districts. The mayor of the council was also recruited from among the councilors.
