Coordinates: 30 ° 58 ' S , 150 ° 15' O Gunnedah Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 4,987.0 km² and has about 12,000 inhabitants.
Gunnedah is located in the northeast of the state about 450 km north of the metropolis of Sydney and 650 km southwest of Brisbane . The area includes 37 hamlets and towns, including Breeza, Carroll, Carroll Gap, Coocooboonah, Curlewis, Emerald Hill, Gunnedah , Kelvin, Meermaul, Mullaley, Piallaway, Tambar Springs. The headquarters of the Shire Council is in Gunnedah in the center of the LGA, where about 8,000 people live.

The Gunnedah Shire Council has nine members who are elected by LGA residents. Gunnedah is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
