Gunnar Bråthen

Gunnar Bråthen (born October 7, 1896 in Hole ; † June 7, 1980 ) was a Norwegian trade unionist and politician of the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap). From August 1955 to April 1959 he was the Minister for Wages and Prices of his country.

Life

Bråthen attended a technical evening school and graduated as a winder in 1917. In 1919 he worked as a secretary in his party's youth organization, the Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking (AUF). From 1922 to 1925 he was a councilor in Kristiania (now Oslo ). At that time he was on the board of the Norwegian Iron and Metal Workers Association. He then worked there as a secretary until 1931. Between 1931 and 1938 he worked as a secretary at the Federation of Trade Unions in Hedmark Province . He then acted again as secretary, now he was responsible for northern Norway at the trade union umbrella organization Landsorganisasjonen i Norge (LO) until 1941 . During the Second World War he was imprisoned in the Grini Police Detention Center. After the end of the war he worked until 1950 as secretary and deputy chairman of the LO at the state level.

Between 1949 and 1957 Bråthen was a member of the Arbeiderpartiet board. From 1950 to 1963 he was, with interruptions, head of the Arbeidsdirektoratet , an authority subordinate to the Ministry of Social Affairs. On August 1, 1955, he was appointed Minister for Wages and Prices in the Gerhardsen II government. Bråthen held this office until April 9, 1959.
