Gunnar MK Graarud , full Gunnar Magnus Kjølstad Graarud (born August 22, 1857 in Hammerfest ; died June 22, 1932 in Holmestrand ) was a Norwegian doctor and politician.

Life

Gunnar Magnus Kjølstad Graarud was born in Hammerfest in Finnmark, where his father, the doctor Bernt Anton Jacob Bremer Graarud (1823-1887) was first district doctor, later head of the city health authority. As a newly trained doctor, Graarud came to Holmestrand in the province of Vestfold in 1882 , where he opened his own practice at Langgatan 39. In 1889 he moved to a corner house on Torvet, which he later bought. He lived and worked there until his death in 1932. From 1896, Graarud was also senior physician at the (Kur) Bad Modum.

Graarud represented the Høyre party in the city council of Holmestrand from 1892 and was its chairman from 1898 to 1900 and from 1907 to 1909. He was also mayor for several years . In 1900 he was elected to Storting , where he was a member of parliament for two periods, from 1900 to 1903 and from 1903 to 1906. He was also a member of the church committee. In 1905 he was the first in Holmestrand to cast a yes vote in the vote to dissolve the union with Sweden . He was awarded the medal on June 7, 1905 .

In August 1992, the Høyre politician Mona Røkke unveiled a statue of Graarud made by the sculptor Arne Durban. The bust stands in front of the Holmestrand Museum, a museum that Graarud co-founded as a local historian and patriot. Graarud was also an avid amateur photographer.

Gunnar Graarud married "Karen" Hedevig Nicolava Gran (* 1857) in 1883, their only surviving child was the opera singer Gunnar Graarud (1886–1960).
