Gunter E. Grimm

Gunter E. Grimm (* 1945 in Bad Wurzach ) is a German literary scholar .

Life

After attending school in Esslingen am Neckar and in Stuttgart with high school diploma in 1964, Grimm studied German and history in Tübingen. He received his doctorate in 1970 and completed his habilitation in 1981 with the study of literature and scholarship in Germany . After substituting professorships in Bielefeld and Gießen and a stay as a visiting professor at Washington University in St. Louis / Missouri, he was C2 professor in Tübingen from 1983 to 1987 , C3 professor in Würzburg from 1988 to 1994 and C4 professor for Newer German literature at the Gerhard Mercator University in Duisburg and after the merger of the Universities of Duisburg and Essen to form the University of Duisburg-Essen until his retirement (2010) on the Essen campus . He is a member of numerous scientific societies and associations.

His main focus in literary studies is Enlightenment literature , in particular Johann Gottfried Herder and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing , the history of science and mentality from the Renaissance to the present, literary theory (aesthetics and poetics; reception research , imagology ), German-foreign literary relations (Italy, Netherlands, Orient, America, German-Jewish literature, Netherlands image and Netherlands reception in German literature), black romanticism, literature of the 19th and 20th centuries, Rhenish literature and the history of German poetry from the baroque to the present. From imagological , reception, mentality and social-historical approaches, he developed a functional- historical view of literature, which has been reflected in numerous, including journalistic publications.

In addition to the scientific publication work, he acts as co-editor of the workbooks on literary history. Epoch - Work - Impact (1975–2013, 29 volumes), the Introductory German Studies (2003–2017, 49 volumes), the Literature and Media series and as sole editor of the Compact Literature series, which has been published since 2012 (15 volumes so far).

Grimm is editor and author of the Goethezeit internet portal (since 2005, together with Georg Jäger, Danica Krunic and Martin Huber) and the Nibelungenreception internet portal (since 2002), which deals with the reception of the Nibelungen material in literature, art, film, politics and science from the Dedicated from early modern times to the present.
