Günther Hartmann

Günther Hartmann (born January 13, 1924 in Berlin ; † December 9, 2012 there ) was a German ethnologist .

Life

Günther Hartmann in 1959 at the Free University of Berlin Dr. phil. obtained his doctorate and in 1962 accepted a position as a research assistant at the Museum für Völkerkunde Berlin. In 1967 he received a lectureship at the Free University, in 1969 he became curator and in 1971 chief curator of the Berlin State Museums . In 1982 he was appointed honorary professor at the Free University. From 1985 until his retirement in 1989 he headed the American Indigenous Peoples Department at the Berlin Ethnographic Museum.

From 1980 to 1983 Hartmann was chairman of the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory , of which he became an honorary member.

His research focus was the indigenous peoples of South America. The private collection that he brought together with his wife Ursula enriched numerous exhibitions.

From 1963 to 1989 he published the journal for ethnology .
