Gunther Kaschlun

Gunther Kaschlun (born February 9, 1935 in Essen ; † July 20, 2020 there ) was a German rower .

Career

Kaschlun became a member of the rowing department of the Essen gymnastics and fencing club (ETUF). His discipline within rowing became the four-man without a helmsman. He was soon used in international competitions because of his and his teammates' achievements. So he took part in the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , where the boat was eliminated in the semifinals in the four without a helmsman. Previously he had won 3rd place and a bronze medal with the four-man team at the European Championships in Bled (Yugoslavia) .

In 1957 he and his team ( Christian Stewens , Horst Stobbe , Kaschlun and Wilhelm Montag ) won the European championship and thus the gold medal in Duisburg . For winning the European Championship, he and his team received the Silver Laurel Leaf in 1957 . In 1957 the Essenes also won the German championship title. He won another German championship title in 1960 when he crossed the finish line with Peter Stewens and Günter Gudert as the first in two with helmsman.

Further honors

Since Gunther Kaschlun also developed sport-political initiatives, he was honored several times by both municipal and sports associations. In 1990 the DRV awarded him the plaque for special services to the DRV, the city of Essen, also in 1990, the plaque for excellent sports management. He also became honorary chairman of the Essen Regatta Club and the ETUF e. V.
