Guoliang Yu (born August 11, 1963 ) is an American mathematician.

Guoliang Yu received his PhD in 1991 from the State University of New York at Stony Brook with Ronald G. Douglas (K Theoretic Indices of Dirac Type Operator on Complete Manifolds and Roe Algebra). As a post-doctoral student , he was at MSRI and then taught at the University of Colorado , from 2000 at Vanderbilt University and from 2012 at Texas A&M University (Thomas W. Powell Chair).

He was a visiting scientist at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge, the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, the Fudan University in Shanghai and the Australian National University.

He deals with non-commutative geometry , higher index theory of elliptic operators, K-theory, and geometric group theory. Among other things, he made contributions to the Novikov conjecture of topology, according to which so-called higher signatures are homotopy invariants. He also contributed to the Borel conjecture, connected with the Novikov conjecture, about the rigidity of aspheric closed manifolds and to the Baum-Connes conjecture in the K-theory of C * algebras of groups, which also belongs to this radius.

In 2006 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid (Higher index theory of elliptic operators and geometry of groups). He was plenary speaker at the International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians.

He is editor of the Journal of Noncommutative Geometry, the Annals of K-Theory, the Journal of Topology and Analysis, and the Kyoto Journal of Mathematics.

He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
