Ronald George Douglas (born December 10, 1938 in Osgood (Indiana) - † February 27, 2018 ) was an American mathematician .

Career

Douglas studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1960 and received his doctorate in 1962 with Pasquale Porcelli at Louisiana State University ( Structure of Lp spaces ). After that he was first an instructor and later a professor at the University of Michigan . From 1969 he was a professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook (SUNY). From 1971 to 1973 he was head of the mathematics faculty, from 1986 to 1990 he was dean of physics and mathematics and from 1990 vice provost. From 1996 to 2002 he was Provost at Texas A&M University . After that he was Distinguished Professor of Mathematics there.

In 1965/66 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study and in 1974 visiting scholar at the University of Newcastle. He was visiting professor at Aarhus University, the Mittag-Leffler Institute , the Australian National University (1991), Tel Aviv University and the University of Szechuan. In 1978 he gave the Hermann Weyl Lectures at the Institute for Advanced Study and in 1978 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Helsinki ( Extensions of C * -algebras and algebraic topology ).

He dealt with functional analysis and operator algebras. In 1977, together with Lawrence G. Brown and Peter Fillmore, he introduced techniques of algebraic topology into the theory of operator algebras, which is known as the BDF theory after the first letters of the mathematicians involved .

He was a fellow of the American Mathematical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science . In 1980/81 he was a Guggenheim Fellow and from 1968 to 1974 a Sloan Fellow.

He is the father of the physicist Michael R. Douglas .
