Gustáv Slamečka

Gustáv Slamečka (born June 5, 1959 in Nitra ) is a Czech politician of Slovak descent. He was the Czech Minister of Transport in Jan Fischer's interim government from 2009 to 2010. Slamečka became known as the first Czech minister who did not have Czech citizenship at the time of his appointment .

Life

Slamečka comes from Nitra in today's Slovakia . He studied at the University of Economics in Banska Bystrica , later in the United States at the University of Pittsburgh and in Australia . He has lived in Prague since 1996 .

In 2009 he was nominated by the Democratic Citizens Party (ODS) as Minister of Transport and appointed as such in May 2009. The fact that he was not a Czech citizen was described by the opposition Social Democratic Party as a risk to national security. The problem was resolved in November 2009 with the accelerated granting of Czech citizenship.

Slamečka is openly homosexual and, as a minister, was attacked by ODS chairman Mirek Topolánek for his sexual orientation .
