Gustav Düben or Gustaf Düben (* around 1628; † December 19, 1690 ) was a Swedish court conductor , organist and composer in Stockholm ( Sweden ).

Life

Gustav Düben was the son of Andreas Dübens , an immigrant from Germany, who had been a student of Sweelinck and who held the offices of court conductor and organist at the German church of St. Gertrud in Stockholm . In his youth his father sent him to Germany for training. In 1647 Gustav Düben joined the Royal Swedish Court Orchestra (Kungliga Hovkapellet) and followed his father in his offices in 1663 after he had died a year earlier. His two sons again followed their father in office, Gustav the Younger (from 1690 to 1698) and Anders (from 1698 to 1726). From 1640 he put together an extensive collection of musical works of his time, which he had collected on trips abroad, among other things. This " dowel collection " is one of the most important sources for 17th century music.

From Duben's own musical works, some psalms, arias, choirs and dances have been preserved, which follow the North German style of his time.
