Gustaf Einar Du Rietz

Gustaf Einar Du Rietz (born April 25, 1895 in Bromma , Sweden, † March 7, 1967 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish botanist , ecologist and plant sociologist . Its botanical author's abbreviation is " Du Rietz ".

Du Rietz studied botany at Uppsala University , where he received his doctorate in 1922. From 1924 to 1927 he was a curator at the Botanical Museum in Uppsala and took part in a vegetation research trip to North America, Australia, New Zealand and Java from 1926 to 1927. From 1931 to 1934 he was Associate Professor of Plant Ecology at Uppsala University.

Du Rietz founded the so-called "Uppsala School" within plant sociology. This represents a concept in which the basic units of the plant sociological system are determined by the dominance of certain species.

In addition to plant sociology, lichen science was one of his research areas.
