Gustav Adolf Knauer (born October 30, 1886 in Berlin ; † June 12, 1950 there ) was a German film architect , one of the most creative set designers in German cinema between 1919 and 1945.
Live and act
Knauer received his professional training as a theater painter at the academy in his hometown Berlin and then worked as an employee for the largest Berlin theater company, the purveyor to the court Hugo Baruch & Cie. In 1911 Gustav Knauer joined Oskar Messter's production company . There he began his career as an assistant and auxiliary architect. The First World War interrupted his activity for the cinema.
In 1919 Knauer began to work as chief architect at Deutsche Bioscop. His first sets were seen in several dramas by Swedish director Nils Chrisander . In the next quarter of a century Knauer equipped well over 150 films for a wide variety of production companies, including numerous simply designed comedies, thrillers and romances. His more important works include Urban Gad's Hanneles Himmelfahrt as well as some popular folk-play films such as Das Veilchen vom Potsdamer Platz . In 1920 and 1935, however, he also supplied some of the first Karl May films with his decorations : The Caravan of Death and Through the Desert . At the end of the war in 1945, Knauer withdrew from film. A planned comeback was thwarted by his death in 1950.
