Gustav Billeter

Gustav Billeter (* 19th December 1873 in Zurich , † 24 / 25 June 1929 ) was a Swiss classical scholar and high school teacher .

From 1892 to 1897 he studied at the University of Zurich , where his work “History of the interest rate in Greco-Roman antiquity up to Justinian. Part I: The rate of interest in Greece and Asia Minor up to around 250 AD » received his doctorate. He completed his habilitation in Zurich in 1899 and worked as a private lecturer in history at the University of Zurich until 1912. From 1902 to 1928 he was a grammar school teacher for Latin and Greek at the grammar school in Zurich, where Elias Canetti was one of his students. In January 1910 in Zurich, in the estate of Barbara Schulthess, he discovered Goethe's fragmentary archetype of Wilhelm Meister's apprenticeship years , the design begun in 1777 with the title Wilhelm Meister's theatrical mission .
