Gustav Dürr (born May 29, 1853 in Lindau (Lake Constance) , † February 14, 1908 in Düsseldorf ) was a German engineer , entrepreneur and inventor of the Dürr boiler .

Life

His father Josef Dürr (1803–1882) was a senior customs officer in the civil service and chairman of the Lake Constance Commission . His mother Hermine Dürr geb. Rassmann (1821–1887) was the daughter of forester Karl Christiansen Wilhelm Rassmann in Magdeburg .

Dürr studied engineering at the Technical University of Munich . He then worked as a designer at the Meister, Lucius & Brüning paintworks in Höchst am Main .

Its first construction was a single-chamber water tube boiler . This work was so successful that the design was granted a patent in several states. The novelty was that the disadvantages of the old water tube boiler were overcome, because it combined the advantages of a tube boiler with those of a large water boiler. The use of construction material could also be significantly reduced, with even greater elasticity of the components.

These successes encouraged Dürr to found their own company in Ratingen with his brother Walther in 1883 . Until 1889 he ran the Düsseldorf-Ratinger Röhrenkesselfabrik Dürr & Co. , then it was converted into a stock corporation, where he was a member of the board.

Its boiler was used in both merchant and warships. A total of more than 2,000 copies of this type were used until 1907. When technical findings led to a new construction, the Garbe kettle , he managed to acquire a license for this construction method for his factory before his death .
