Gustav Eger

Gustav Eger (born April 20, 1827 in Grünberg (Hesse) ; † April 16, 1894 in Darmstadt ) was a German language teacher and librarian .

Life

Gustav Conrad Eger was born in Grünberg near Gießen in 1827 as the son of master roofer Jakob Eger and his wife Elisabeth Nagel. After graduating, he was a private tutor in Friedberg (Hessen) for a short time . In 1865 he came to the Polytechnic School in Darmstadt as a teacher of foreign languages, a predecessor of the TH Darmstadt. In January 1866 he got a job as a full teacher at the Polytechnic. Three years later he also received a teaching position for foreign languages ​​and Protestant religion at the Polytechnic. Since 1870 he has also been a translator from French, English, Italian, Spanish and Dutch for the civil ministry in Hessen-Darmstadt. Since 1873 he has also been a translator from the Danish, Swedish and Hungarian languages ​​for the ministry. In 1871 Gustav Eger received the title of professor.

From 1881 until his death in 1894, Gustav Eger headed the university library of the TH Darmstadt, which had existed since 1872 . He performed this office on a part-time basis. Since March 1892 the university library was rented due to space constraints. Eger urged that the university library should be given suitable rooms during the construction planning for the planned new main building of the TH Darmstadt on Hochschulstrasse. This meant that the architect Heinrich Wagner planned two larger rooms for the university library on the ground floor at the end of the hall, facing the foyer. Gustav Eger did not live to see the inauguration of the main building in October 1895.

Gustav Eger died in April 1894 shortly after his 67th birthday. Since 1858 he was married to Marie Louise Eleonore Köhler (1836-1892), the daughter of the Darmstadt superintendent Karl Köhler . From marriage is u. a. Karl Eger emerged.
