Life

Ramming the "Archduke Ferdinand Max" near Lissa.

Kappler was born into a working-class family in Trieste and was on record for the first time in 1875 as an employee of the construction management of the San Marco shipyard . He worked there for a year as a technical draftsman (exact description: "drawing diurist" ). On October 6, 1876, Kappler joined the sailors' corps of the Austro-Hungarian Navy , and at the beginning of 1878 he was promoted to weapons guest. On May 1, 1890, he received a post in the Navy as a temporary draftsman 2nd class. Gustav Kappler married in 1895 and had two sons. In 1904 he was appointed first class draftsman. During his time in the Imperial Navy, Kappler repeatedly worked as a marine painter, but only a few of his works have survived. One of them is now in the permanent exhibition of the Vienna Museum of Military History (Marinesaal). Kappler's best-known picture is the ramming blow of "Archduke Ferdinand Max" near Lissa from the sea battle of Lissa , which depicts the decisive moment of the battle. This painting was reproduced in 1896 and 1908.

Kappler's eyesight deteriorated significantly with increasing age, so that on February 1, 1912, he was retired as a naval officer. He continued to live in Trieste (Via Fondario No. 6) and in a letter dated March 1, 1920 asked for a pension decree to be issued. Two years later he died in his hometown.
