Gustav Kowalewski

Gustav Kowalewski (* 1905 , † 1957 ) was a German mountaineer and pioneer of mountain rescue in the Harz Mountains .

Life

Kowalewski lived in the city of Thale and was already enthusiastic about mountaineering as a young person. So he laid the first mountaineering routes on the rock of the Roßtrappe above the Bodetal . In 1923, Kowalewski was only 18 years, he asked the local police, one in mountain emergencies to rescue tourists located what Kowalewski then succeeded. A long-term cooperation developed in which Kowalewski was repeatedly called to rescue operations.

Kowalewski gained a legendary reputation and became known as the White Stag of the Bode Valley . By 1938 he had already carried out 35 mountain rescues and received the life saving medal on the ribbon for this. By 1957 he had carried out a total of 64 rescues.

Kowalewski died of heart failure in 1957 . A plaque near Königsruhe commemorates him and his 64 rescues.
