Gustav Meyer , since 1897 Ritter von Meyer , (born February 9, 1834 in Ansbach , † January 19, 1909 in Bayreuth ) was a judicial advisor and honorary citizen of Bayreuth.

Life

Meyer was the eldest son of Henriette Magdalena and Johann Georg Meyer. The father was an elementary teacher, organist, curator and until 1868 responsible editor of the Fränkische Zeitung in Ansbach. He became known as the tutor of Kaspar Hauser during his last years in Ansbach. Gustav Meyer's brother Julius Meyer, an honorary citizen of the city of Ansbach in 1906, was the district court director and local historian.

After studying law, Meyer came to Bayreuth as a trainee lawyer , where he settled permanently. Due to his legal talent, he was appointed royal advocate and attorney in 1868 , an unusually early appointment for the time. As a parish council he proved at the end of 1896 after the Bayreuth credit and Vorschußverein had collapsed due to a huge deficit. The cashier and accountant, a pair of brothers, had embezzled 713,000 marks . Meyer founded an aid committee that was able to make up for the shortfall in one and a half years through donations. This relief operation averted bankruptcy and major financial damage for the members of the credit association. On July 23, 1898, the relief operation was officially declared over.

As early as November 8, 1897, the city of Bayreuth made Meyer an honorary citizen for his services, including for the aforementioned rescue operation. The following year Prince Regent Liutpold awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown . With the award, the elevation to the personal nobility was connected and he was allowed to call himself "Ritter von Meyer" after the entry in the nobility register . He had already received the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Merit from St. Michael in 1887 .

Meyer was married to the daughter of the writer Friedrich Küll , but she died three years after the wedding. In 1906 Meyer retired.
