Gustav Schäfer (politician, 1892)

Gustav Schäfer (born May 19, 1892 in Gerterode , Worbis district , † March 7, 1965 in Verden ) was a German politician ( SPD ) and a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament .

Life

After finishing school, Gustav Schäfer completed an apprenticeship. After that he was employed in almost all regions of Germany and joined the union in 1910. In the First World War he was a combatant from 1914 to 1918. In 1918 he became a member of the SPD and in the same year began to get involved in local politics. From 1929 he was mayor of Gerterode. During the Nazi era , he was removed from office for political reasons in 1933 and imprisoned in Worbis prison. After his release, he switched to a commercial profession. After working in the insurance industry for four years, he became chief inspector and, in 1943, district manager in Verden, and after the end of the Second World War in 1948, he was also a city councilor and mayor from 1948 to 1951 and 1952 to 1956.

Schäfer was presented with the Cross of Merit First Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. From May 6, 1951 to March 7, 1965 he was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament (2nd to 5th electoral term), and from March 23, 1960 to May 5, 1963, he chaired the Committee on Health Care.
