Gustav Steinhoff
Gustav Steinhoff (born September 15, 1958 in Kleve ) is a German heart surgeon at the University of Rostock . He has emerged in the field of stem cell research .
Life
After graduating from high school in Kleve, Steinhoff studied medicine at the Erasmus University Rotterdam from 1977 to 1984 with a research stay in 1980 at Baylor College , Houston, Texas. After completing his military service as a military doctor, he was a research assistant in the laboratory for transplant immunology at the Clinic for Abdominal and Transplant Surgery, and in 1987 he received his doctorate from the Medical University of Hanover and from 1986 to 1992 the specialist training in surgery in Hanover.
From 1993 to 1996 Steinhoff worked as a senior physician at the Clinic for Cardiovascular Surgery, University Clinic of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel and received the Venia legendi for surgery at the Hannover Medical School in 1994 . In 1996 he became a senior physician at the Clinic for Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery (Director: Axel Haverich ) at the Medical University of Hanover and was in charge of pediatric cardiac surgery . He co-founded the “Leibniz Research Laboratories for Biotechnology and Artificial Organs”. In 1998 he was appointed adjunct professor for surgery / cardiothoracic surgery at the Hannover Medical School, and in 1999 he took over the management of the clinic for thoracic, cardiovascular and general surgery at the Oststadt Clinic .
On September 1, 2000 Steinhoff was appointed professor for cardiac surgery and director of the clinic and polyclinic for cardiac surgery at the University of Rostock. There he founded the Institute for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Therapy IRMED e. V. as well as the reference and translation center for cardiac stem cell therapy.
With a stem cell therapy for sick hearts z. B. after a heart attack clinical successes have been achieved. The procedures are being tested and expanded.
