Gustav Vriesen

Gustav Vriesen (born January 23, 1912 in Essen , † April 4, 1960 ) was a German art historian .

Life

After graduating from the Helmholtz high school in Essen, he studied art history, classical archeology and German in Berlin and Munich. After receiving his doctorate in 1936, he initially volunteered at the museum in Lübeck , and from 1936 he was a research assistant at the Landesmuseum Oldenburg . After his military service he returned to the State Museum and, as a board member of the Oldenburg Art Association, was the director of its exhibition activities on modern art. In 1948 he organized the first post-war exhibition of August Macke's work . From 1951 he was deputy director of the State Museum in Oldenburg. From October 1, 1954 until his death, he was the first full-time director of the Städtisches Kunsthaus Bielefeld , whose collection he expanded. In Bielefeld he organized exhibitions on Hermann Blumenthal , Wilhelm Lehmbruck , Reg Butler , Richard Haizmann , Hermann Stenner , the watercolors by Macke and Sonia Delaunay .

He wrote the first catalog raisonné by August Macke.
