The KWD VT 20 diesel multiple unit was procured by Kleinbahn Weidenau – Deuz and, along with Kleinstein – Waldbröl 32 and Butjadinger Bahn T 2, was one of the largest two-axle railcars on private railways in the period before World War II . It was in operation until 1962 and was then converted into a motorless sidecar for traveling on the route. His whereabouts are not known.

history

The third from the series of the largest two-axle railcars built by Waggon- und Maschinenbau Görlitz in Görlitz before the Second World War was procured by Kleinbahn Weidenau-Deuz, which planned in 1935 to convert all passenger traffic to railcar operation. The first railcar was not delivered until 1939. Further procurements could not be realized due to the outbreak of the World War.

This planned conversion of passenger traffic could only be completed in 1955 with the purchase of several Uerdingen rail buses . It is known about the VT 20 that it was sold to the Cologne-Frechen-Benzelrath railway as a tour vehicle in 1962 . The further whereabouts are unknown.

Constructive features

The railcar with the serial number 2103/1939 belonged to a series of vehicles for the small railways in Germany , of which Waggon- und Maschinenbau Görlitz (WUMAG) in Görlitz had created the design in 1933. Initially, the vehicles did not have a pulling and buffing device . The VT 20 multiple unit, which is much larger than the WUMAG type 2 , had coupling options for sidecars ex works. The wheel base of 8.26 m was only exceeded by the MAN rail buses .

The underframe and the box frame , which were made in frame construction and clad on the outside with 1.5 mm thick sheet metal, consisted of electrically welded structural steel profiles. The interior was divided into the passenger compartment and the two entry areas with driver's cabs. They were separated from one another by partitions and revolving doors. The passenger compartment was designed as an open plan. The floor was made of pine wood covered with linoleum. The machine system could be serviced via flaps in the floor. The windows were designed as hinged windows.

The machine system consisted of two engines with 130 HP each, these were each equipped with a Mylius gearbox . The motors could be operated individually or together. The engines and gearboxes were stored in a separate frame that was suspended from the main frame of the vehicle. The vehicle was heated by a hot water heater, which was able to heat the interior of the vehicle to +20 ° C at an outside temperature of −20 ° C. The heater could be used to preheat the engine cooling water to a temperature of 70 ° C. The single-release Knorr type brake was intended for a sidecar operation.

The electrical equipment consisted of the alternator and a battery that supplied the energy for the on-board network with a voltage of 24 V. The compressed air required for the brakes, gearshift and auxiliaries was generated by two air pumps that were directly connected to the engine. The railcar was equipped with two typhones and two bells.
